Edge Feathering

Smooth out edges with feather control. Soften the transition between subject and transparent background for professional cutouts.

Transparent Output

Download as PNG with full alpha transparency. The checkerboard preview shows exactly which parts are transparent.

100% Browser-Based

No server uploads, no data sent anywhere. Everything runs locally in your browser using Canvas API. Your images stay private.

What is Background Removal?+

How Background Removal Works

Background removal is the process of isolating the foreground subject from the background in an image, resulting in a transparent (alpha channel) image. ImgNeo uses color-based segmentation — you click on a pixel in the background, and the tool identifies all pixels with similar color values and makes them transparent. This approach works best for images with solid or near-solid backgrounds, like product photos on white, screenshots, logos, and graphics. The tolerance slider controls how broad the color matching is, while edge feathering creates a smooth transition between subject and transparent areas.

Color-Based vs AI Background Removal

Color-based removal (what our tool uses) is fast, precise, and gives you full manual control. It works perfectly for images with uniform backgrounds — think product photos on white, logos on solid backgrounds, screenshots, and simple graphics. You control exactly what gets removed through the tolerance slider. AI-based removal uses machine learning models to detect foreground subjects automatically, which is better for complex backgrounds like outdoor scenes or photos with many colors, but often requires uploading your image to a server.

Our browser-based approach means your images never leave your device — a big plus for privacy and speed. For simple backgrounds, you'll get faster and more controllable results with our tool than with most AI services. For complex photos with varied backgrounds, you may want to use a dedicated AI background remover.

Pro Tips for Clean Cutouts

For the best results, start with a low tolerance and gradually increase it until the background is mostly gone. Click on different parts of the background to test — shadows and corners often have slightly different colors. Use edge feathering (1-3 pixels) to soften jagged edges, especially around hair or fine details. If parts of your subject get removed by mistake, try lowering the tolerance or clicking on a slightly different shade of the background color. Always download as PNG — it's the only common format that supports transparency. After removing the background, you can use our other tools to add a new background, apply filters, or add text overlays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about background remover

What types of images work best with this tool?+

Our background remover works best with images that have solid, uniform backgrounds — such as product photos on white backgrounds, logos, icons, screenshots, and graphics. It works by matching colors, so the more uniform your background, the cleaner the result. For complex backgrounds with many colors and textures, you may need an AI-based background remover instead.

What does the tolerance slider do?+

Tolerance controls how similar a pixel's color needs to be to the clicked color to get removed. Low tolerance (0-20) removes only very similar colors — great for precise removal on clean backgrounds. High tolerance (50-100) removes a broader range of colors — useful for backgrounds with slight variations, gradients, or shadows. Start low and increase gradually for the best control.

What is edge feathering and when should I use it?+

Edge feathering creates a soft, gradual transition between the cutout subject and the transparent background. Without feathering, edges can look jagged or pixelated. Use 1-3 pixels of feathering for most images. More feathering (5-10px) works well for fuzzy edges like hair or fur, or when you want a softer, more blended look when compositing onto new backgrounds.

Why can't I just use a white background image directly?+

Images with white backgrounds look fine on white websites but show an ugly white box when placed on any other color, over images, or in presentations. Transparent PNGs blend seamlessly with any background color or design, making them much more versatile for design work, marketing materials, and web use.

Will my images be uploaded to your server?+

No. All background removal happens directly in your web browser using the Canvas API and JavaScript pixel manipulation. Your image data never leaves your device. This means the tool is completely private, works offline (once the page is loaded), and has no file size limits from server upload constraints.

Can I remove multiple background colors?+

Currently, you can pick one background color at a time. If your image has multiple background colors, try clicking on the most common one and increasing tolerance — this often covers most background variations. For images with very different background colors, you may need to use a more advanced editor or process the image in steps.
